Marvolo Gaunt was Tom Riddle's maternal grandfather. In trying to make himself invincible Tom placed a powerful curse on the ring. Unbeknownst to Tom, the stone in the ring was also known as the ressurection stone. Dumbledore later found the ring, and was tempted and put on the ring, which was the true reason that he died. Dumbledore was able to crack the stone with the sword of Griffindor and break the curse.
